Start with the inseam, because it is the one number that separates tall jeans from regular jeans marketed as long. Ranges of 32, 34, and 36 inches cover most tall frames, and the right choice depends on the shoe as much as the leg: a 34 inch inseam breaks properly over flats while 36 inches is what a wide leg or flare needs to stay off the floor in heels. Rise is the second decision and the one that produces the most returns. A long torso swallows a mid rise, so a jean sold as high waisted on an average frame lands closer to natural waist on a tall one, and the waistband sitting too low is what causes gaping at the back and a crotch seam that hangs. Stretch content changes how forgiving the fit is: a few percent elastane in a straight or skinny leg lets the knee sit where your knee actually is rather than mid-shin, while rigid denim in a long inseam has to be graded correctly or it fits nowhere. Check whether the hem is finished at that length or left raw for tailoring, since a factory hem in your inseam saves an alteration. Leg shape, wide, straight, skinny, or flare, is style rather than fit, and it should be the last thing you decide.
