A footrest is the fix for a desk that cannot go high enough, which is the usual problem for anyone over about six foot two. Raise the chair until your forearms clear a fixed desktop and your feet leave the floor, and the missing distance is what the footrest has to make up, typically four to seven inches. That makes adjustment range the only spec worth leading with: a platform fixed at four inches is useless if you need six and a half, while models offering a 4.25 to 6.75 inch span or three to six discrete positions let you find the height where your knees sit at roughly the same level as your hips.
