California king
A mattress measuring 72 by 84 inches, four inches longer but three inches narrower than a standard king, a popular choice for tall sleepers who want length.
A California king measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long, compared to a standard king at 76 by 80 inches. The tradeoff is straightforward: a California king trades three inches of width for four extra inches of length, which makes it a common pick for tall sleepers who care more about stretching out than about sleeping wider.
For anyone over about 6 feet 4 inches, that extra length can be the difference between feet resting comfortably on the mattress and feet hanging past the edge. Couples where one or both partners are tall sometimes choose a California king over a standard king specifically for this reason, even though the narrower width means slightly less room to spread out side to side.
Because the dimensions differ from a standard king, sheets, comforters, and mattress toppers are not interchangeable between the two sizes, so it is worth double-checking the label before buying bedding. Bed frames are also usually sold in a specific size, so a standard king frame will not properly support a California king mattress without an insert or a different frame.
