Desk height range

The lowest and highest height a standing desk can reach, with the maximum being the number that matters most for anyone over about six feet tall.

Every standing desk lists a height range, usually something like 24 to 50 inches, describing the lowest sitting height and the highest standing height the desktop can reach. Most buyers focus on the low end for comfortable sitting, but for a tall user the high end is the number that actually determines whether the desk will work at all.

A desk that tops out at 48 inches may sound tall, but once a keyboard tray or the natural elbow height of someone well over six feet is factored in, that maximum can still leave the desk sitting noticeably too low for proper standing posture. This is the single most common reason tall users end up hunching over an otherwise good desk.

When comparing desks, check the maximum height against your own elbow height while standing, not just the desk's marketed range compared to other desks. Desk converters and monitor risers can sometimes bridge a small gap, but they do not fix a desk that is fundamentally too short at its highest setting, so it is worth getting the base height right first.
